The power of our choices

Woman meditating in nature

I once learned that you can reinvent yourself over and over again and, simply by behaving differently and making different choices, you could be anyone you want. Considering that I had felt awkward, ashamed, and uncomfortable in my skin for most of my life, I was immediately hooked on that idea. It was about the same time I decided to do the exact opposite of pretty much everything I had learned until then (read more in Blog Nr. 1 & 2). As I reflected on who I was being vs. who I wanted to become, I wanted to believe it was more than perfect timing for this revelation.

Who are you being?

As I have briefly mentioned in my last post, our life is the product of our daily choices. Out of thousands of choices, we have only a few hundred daily that we can consciously influence and that can pivot the path we are on. These choices are driven by many factors of your being we will need to bring attention to. For that, let us assess the person you are right now. This will help you define the discrepancy between who you are and who you need to be to attract the success you wish for. To do so, answer the following questions:

  • What are you investing most of your energy in?

  • What are your repeating thoughts about your desired success?

  • What are the matching emotions you feel about it?

  • What type of media are you consuming?

  • What kind of people are you surrounding yourself with?

  • What activities do you follow in your free time?

  • Who/What is driving the decisions of your life? You? Your parents? Your partner? Your job? Your community? .....

Reread your answers and ask yourself the concluding question: Are the answers leading me towards or away from my success? Many of us wish for a better life, better health, more happiness, and so on, without realizing that our thoughts and actions simply do not match that.

How you create your life

'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over

and expecting different results.' - Albert Einstein

Einstein was a genius, basically summoning what the Yogis already practiced thousands of years ago and so beautifully explained in the ancient texts of the Yoga Sutras:

Our repeated thoughts will become automated thought habits, which lead us to certain repeated behaviors. If these habits become strong enough, they will make up our personality, define the way we perceive the world, and therefore live our entire lives. If we continuously think that the world is a bad place, we will start believing it, act with bitterness, and in a mindset of fear and sadness which will make our thoughts remain dark. It is a downwards-moving spiral that will bring nothing but despair.

If we want to break the cycle, we must learn to create new thought patterns. We need to train ourselves to think our way into a better existence, let our encouraging thoughts influence our actions, and in that way create habits and colorings of our mind that serve our success. Of course, in the Yoga Sutras the suggested most efficient approach is to practice Yoga (who would have guessed it with that title?) to train ourselves to quieten the old, destructive patterns and create new, beneficial ones instead (this seems to be a good point to state my favorite Yogic phrase: 'Yoga is not about the body, it is about the mind).

Who do you become your success?

A good start to rewriting your story and/or mind is to get clear what the destructive patterns are and how you can rearrange your life and actions to provide the right soil for your new habits to be formed. Answer the following questions:

  • What is the person that matches my success like? - What does that person feel/do?

  • What kind of people serve my becoming and my true self?

  • What can I invest my time and energy in that will lead me to success?

  • What media would I benefit from? What media will I avoid?

  • How can I best preserve my energy? - What foods, exercises, and sleeping patterns are best for me?

  • How is my nervous system most regulated so I can be creative and productive? - When/Where/How/With whom do I feel most at peace?

  • What environment nurtures me and enables me to succeed?

  • What are my biggest personal challenges and who could support me in mastering them?

Finding the answers to these questions might already be a life-changing journey for some. We are not raised in a society where we usually question these (life-depending) topics, and yet they are crucial for the attempt to step out of the ordinary rat race and start creating the life we deserve. I suggest you preserve your answers like a personal bible, as they will guide you whenever you feel you have left your path.
